Landscape urbanism CASE01 / 5 projects – A CASE STUDY

The aim of the first CASE Study at the Institute for Architecture and Landscape is the analysis of landscape urbanism via five concrete projects based on a strategic and systemic principle. They differ in objective, content and function.

Two of them deal with the regulated water level and are situated in the Netherlands. Another two projects are located in Germany and concentrate on crop rotation under the aspect of social structure. The fifth project treats the subsequent use of a peat cut in Ireland.

CASE02 Lowland: Meadowlands New Jersey, USA

In serving the iconic modern metropolis – New York City – the Meadowlands tidal estuary has become, over a period of one hundred years, one of the most intriguing examples of an urban infrastructural landscape. With a focus on local specificity based on true scientific and historical data, a set of historical micronarratives will be explored, all having substantially contributed to the genesis of this unique terrain.

So as to narrate the complex interaction and systemic overlap of numerous historical interventions, processes and events the collection of these micronarratives will span jurisdictional, political, disciplinary, ecological and phenomenological boundaries of the current urban and natural construct. The aim here is to raise understanding on how modes of production and consumption, urban dwelling and our relationship to natural processes are undeniably linked. On a local scale, the narration of historical stories will shed light on dependencies and local characteristics not yet being set in causative relationships.
